Plants Map Journal: July Update

purpleconeflowerIs it July already? It seems like summer goes by so fast and there has been so much to do in the garden and at Plants Map! It’s been a great growing season!

What’s new on Plants Map?

We have a new beautiful website redesign and can now make website changes easier and faster. Coming soon the flow and function of the website will be getting a make-over as well to improve and enhance your user experience on the site.

Here are a few changes and features we added since our last monthly update:

  • Map: Is your garden on the map? Click here to find out! You can now add location information to your garden and plants. See the Virginia Big Tree Program for a great example. Every profile will soon have their own custom map on their page too. Map your garden today!
  • Discover: This section is now live and will be our feed showing what is new on the website as it happens. Look for more features here in July.
  • Explore: This section has a new look and is the starting place to search, find and explore gardens, collections, plants and organizations.
  • Like: Sign In and “Like” your favorite gardens, plants and organizations. Your favorites are now saved under “My Likes” under your profile so you can go back and find them.
  • Batch Upload Photos: You can now upload multiple photos at one time using ‘Upload Photos’ link found either on the Map page or under the Create menu. For more information see our article: New Feature – Batch Upload Photos.
  • Map an Organization: You can now add an organization to Plants Map! After you create an individual profile you now have the ability set-up an organization profile from the Map page or under the Create menu. These profiles are for nonprofits such as botanical gardens, community gardens, urban forestry or tree programs, schools, universities, garden clubs, plant societies and more. We are working on a profile for businesses now. More on that soon!
  • Grow your Network: You can now connect your profile an organization’s network. If you want to follow an organization or you are a member, volunteer or supporter, just click the Connect button on that Organization’s profile page. Organizations can also use the Connect button to network with each other as well showing their affiliations.

#Gardenchat: A hashtag that is a community

When we first started Plants Map we discovered #gardenchat, a socially engaged community of folks that love to chat about all topics related to gardening. We reached out to Bren Haas (@BG_garden) the creator, to give #gardenchat a home on Plants Map. It’s a natural fit! On June 30th we were guest hosts on #gardenchat and captured the photo sharing virtual flower show that evening to kick off their Plants Map profile. Now beyond fleeting pictures and shares that pass by on Twitter, we can see a virtual community garden gallery of those gardeners and plants. We also want to thank the local startup Fredericksburg folks that joined us that evening to help with capturing the flower show for #gardenchat. Thanks again to #gardenchat for the opportunity to be a guest host. It was a fun evening of sharing about what we love: plants and gardens!

Welcome to our newest organizations!
